The team at the Swedish brewery Smögenbryggar’n has a penchant for unconventional raw materials. In order to highlight the need to protect our oceans in a delicious way and to support the sustainable cultivation of algae and seaweed, the brewers use exactly these for their unusual brews.
Halv Storm, for example, contains hops, malt, yeast and water as well as a good portion of bladderwrack. But the experiment doesn’t stop there: In order to combine soft malt and a whole lot of hops, the brewery has pushed the boundaries of the classic IPA and developed an India Brown Ale. The hop varieties Citra, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Gem conjure up a variety of fresh citrus and pine notes in the beer, while the dark malt brings roasted aromas and chocolatey hints into play. The mixture of these worlds of taste may seem daring at first glance, but the brewers have used skill and skill to create a magnificent harmony of opposites.
Halv Storm flows into the glass in a shimmering ruby red mahogany brown and is crowned with a head of creamy, fine-pored, ivory-colored foam. Citrus notes, roasted malt, licorice, pine resin, chocolate and hints of hops run like a common thread through the smell and taste. A strong bitterness and a mild sweetness form a balanced whole that should delight both hopheads and malt fans.
