On July 23rd, smoked beer lovers around the world celebrate Rauchbier Preservation Day – and what could be more fitting for this occasion than a very special version of the cult classic from Bamberg? Heller-Bräu Trum, popularly known as Schlenkerla in Bamberg, has been brewing the world's most famous smoked beer for centuries and is a global ambassador for this traditional beer style. Just in time for Rauchbier Preservation Day 2025, the brewery has released an unfiltered version of its popular Märzen: the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen Special Edition, which boasts even more character, depth, and intensity.
By avoiding filtration, natural turbidity, yeast, and fine protein compounds remain in the beer. This not only gives the smoked beer a slightly denser, more velvety texture, but also intensifies the aromatics. The famous smoky flavor is fuller and rounder, while the malt sweetness comes more to the fore, and the added yeast adds extra flavor.
The unfiltered Märzen presents a dark copper color with a fine haze and creamy, hazelnut-brown head. On the nose, powerful smoky notes of beechwood meet bread crust, honey, and a hint of caramel. A full-bodied, harmonious flavor unfolds on the palate: smoke, malt, subtle sweetness, spicy yeast, and a gentle bitterness dance on the tongue.
Cheers to smoked beer in its most original form!
