The tradition of Lenten beers originated in a time when the rules of the Catholic Church strictly governed people's daily lives. During Lent, solid foods were severely restricted or completely forbidden, but liquids were permitted. Resourceful monks then developed potent Lenten beers that, with their increased alcohol and nutritional content, provided sustenance without breaking the fasting rules. These robust, nourishing brews became an integral part of both monastic and civic brewing culture.
The Aecht Schlenkerla Lenten beer from the traditional Bamberg brewery Heller-Bräu Trum follows this historical practice. The 2019 vintage of this smoked beer was brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law and then matured for three years in the cool rock cellars beneath the Stephansberg hill. The beer presents itself in a reddish, shimmering mahogany brown and has a gentle haze because it was not filtered. A soft, fine-pored head crowns the drink.
An enticing smoky aroma unfolds on the nose, reminiscent of bacon bread, mild wood notes, and toffee. On the palate, this Lenten beer is full-bodied and elegant. Sweet caramel and whole-grain bread notes complement the intense smokiness. A mild acidity, gentle carbonation, and a subtle bitterness round out this treat. Despite its depth, the beer is balanced and easy to drink. Delicious as an alternative to, or accompaniment to, a traditional Bavarian snack!
