Like the village inn, the annual fair, the traditional doughnuts at Carnival, and brass band music in the beer tent, the Brotzeit (a hearty snack) is an integral part of everyday life in Bavaria and Franconia. A classic Brotzeit consists of hearty farmer's bread from a stone oven, butter, savory sausage, cheese (with or without onions and caraway seeds), mustard, and, of course, a suitable beer. It is nutritious, down-to-earth, and an expression of shared enjoyment. However, during times of strict church fasting rules, such as between Carnival and Easter, this hearty meal was not permitted. Instead, beers with substance took on a special role: Lenten beer strengthened body and soul without breaking Catholic rules.
Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier continues this old tradition. The unfiltered vintage version from 2021 was brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law and then aged for three years in the cool rock cellars beneath the Stephansberg. The bottom-fermenting yeast gives the beer a rust-red color and a natural haze. A generous amount of stable foam completes the appealing appearance.
The characteristic smokiness is already present in the aroma and runs like a thread through the entire tasting experience. Subtle hop notes and malty depth complement the smoky profile both olfactorily and culinarily. This Lenten beer caresses the palate with a smooth fullness and delivers distinct malt and caramel notes, peaty-smoky nuances, and a hint of whisky. A subtle bitterness provides balance.
A complete and satisfying snack!
