The year 2021 was a turbulent one for humanity: the COVID-19 pandemic continued to grip the world, the issue of vaccination divided society, lockdowns dominated daily life, supply chains faltered, and many people had to learn to cope with uncertainty, isolation, and sacrifice. Yet, amidst all these challenges, this eventful year also brought positive developments. One of these joyful things is the Aecht Schlenkerla Urbock vintage 2021 – a beer that deliciously combines traditional craftsmanship, rustic flavor, and a wonderful smoky aroma.
This vintage version of the Urbock is unfiltered and, after bottling, was stored and matured for four years deep in the cool rock cellars beneath the Stephansberg. It was traditionally brewed in old copper kettles. A high malt content and the exceptionally long maturation process create a well-rounded, deep, and complex beer.
In the glass, the Urbock displays a dark mahogany brown color with an opaque haze and a creamy, finely pored head. The nose unfolds a balanced smoky aroma reminiscent of crispy bread crust, smoked cheese, and bacon. Caramel and roasted notes complete the olfactory bouquet. On the palate, the Urbock is full-bodied and harmonious: a gentle sweetness meets a delicate bitterness, underpinned by smoky malt and a semi-dry character. Stone-baked bread, toffee, subtle smoky notes, and robustly roasted grain combine to create an unparalleled moment of pleasure.
