Carp is a popular food fish that is enjoyed in many different forms in Franconia and Bavaria. You can fry the tasty aquatic creature in batter, roast it in the oven, cook it in a broth made from vinegar, white wine and spices (“blue carp”), cover it with a potato or almond crust, make soup from it or smoke it. Traditionally, carp is only available in pubs and restaurants in the months that contain an “r” and the fish comes from one of the countless carp ponds in Bavaria or is caught in the wild.
The Hösl brewery is also into carp: in the brewery restaurant you can enjoy the finest homemade fish dishes and there is even a beer that fits the theme. The carp drink is a full-bodied festival beer that celebrates the annual carp season and tastes wonderful with fish. The label shows a magnificent mirror carp, behind which is a copper-red brew with a fine veil of foam and a moderate 5.4% alcohol content. The full-bodied beer is wonderfully malty and brings harmoniously rounded notes of hearty grain, creamy caramel and gentle fruit into the glass.
Hösl’s carp drink was brewed on the occasion of the 2024 Fish Adventure Weeks. This annual event celebrates Bavaria’s magnificent fish diversity and uses numerous activities to draw attention to the need to protect our ponds, lakes and waterways.
