Climate change has long since arrived in Germany and is resulting in very different changes. While some parts of the country are expected to be at increased risk of flooding and high tides, other regions are suffering from extreme drought and long periods in which not a single drop of rain falls. In summer, temperatures climb to dizzying heights and the general weather situation has become more unpredictable. Agriculture is one of the professional groups that is hugely affected by this change. Many plant varieties that have produced good yields in recent decades are suffering from the climatic conditions. Hops and grain are also among the problem cases: drought stress and diseases such as powdery mildew or grain rust result in poor harvests and worry both farmers and breweries. Because worry alone rarely leads to positive changes, the hop experts from BarthHaas in Nuremberg have taken on the matter. Together with the Society for Hop Research, they want to breed new, heat- and drought-resistant varieties.

The first harvest has already been harvested and processed into a sample beer in our own brewhouse. After this turned out to be quite positive, the brand new hop variety was passed on to the Rittmayer brewery, which used it to create a new edition of its popular Hellen.

The creation is called Beer for Future and brings a drinkable balance of soft malt and yellow-fruity hops to the glass.
