Saint Boniface is known for his missionary work and unwavering devotion. It is believed that he continued his missionary work well into old age and died a martyr during his final mission. He lived in the early Middle Ages, and it can be assumed that beer was likely part of his daily diet. It is therefore very fitting that the fine dark beer from the Weißenohe monastery brewery is dedicated to this honorable man. This beery tribute is called Bonifatius Dunkel and is a classic Franconian country beer that combines tradition, character, and a full-bodied flavor.
In the glass, the dark beer displays a rich mahogany color with ruby-red highlights and a creamy, beige head with a fine-pored structure. Its aroma is inviting and complex: roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, and a hint of smoke beckon the palate. On the palate, Bonifatius Dunkel unfolds with a full body and harmony. The sweet malt notes combine with a light caramel roastiness and robust dark bread aromas, while a subtle bitterness provides balance. Notes of dark chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit complement the flavor profile and lend the beer depth. A touch of smoke completes the aromatic interplay.
Bonifatius Dunkel is the perfect accompaniment to hearty Franconian cuisine – and would certainly have tasted good to Saint Boniface at the end of a long, hard day of travel!
