Anthony the Great was an ascetic who lived in the second and third centuries AD. His homeland is in what is now Egypt, but his work has made him famous all over the world. In many sources and traditions he is referred to as the founding father of monasticism because he was one of the first to bring Christian hermits together into communities. Anthony is said to have lived to a legendary age of 105, but his influence did not end after his death. The Order of the Antonines was founded in his honor and was dedicated to caring for the sick in the Middle Ages. The monks spread throughout Europe and were rewarded for their services with donations and food. As in all abbeys, the Antonines also brewed beer to supply both the monks themselves and the surrounding villages.
Anthony the Great is the patron saint of farmers, swineherds and butchers. He is also the namesake of a fine Helles beer from Kaiser Bräu in Neuhaus.
The Antoniter Bayrisch Hell is made from selected raw materials from Bavaria and is characterized by its smooth and balanced taste. The beer brings a delicious balance of hearty grain, caramel and grassy hops to the tongue and is not too strong with 5.0% alcohol content.
