Baldur, usually called Balder in German, is a deity from Germanic mythology. He is a descendant of the chief god Odin and his wife Frigg, who are credited with fathering four children and the Valkyries. Baldur was revered for his beauty and peaceful nature and led a tranquil life in Asgard. After dreaming of his own death one night and telling his mother about it, she devised a clever plan. Frigg sought out every animal and plant and extracted promises from them not to harm her son. She spared only the mistletoe, because she considered it too young to commit a crime. This mistake would cost her and her son dearly. When Baldur aroused the envy of the mischievous god Loki, Loki incited Baldur's blind brother Hödur to shoot him with a mistletoe branch. The branch fatally wounded Baldur, but only brought his story to a temporary end.
This fascinating story inspired the Wacken Brewery to create a delicious brew. Following Baldur's symbolism of spring, summer, light, warmth, and joy, the team created a Märzen of the same name. This traditional spring beer is flavored with a thematically appropriate hop variety: Pekko is the Finnish god of fertility and the name of a hop with flavors reminiscent of herbs, summer meadows, and various fruits. Baldur is a mild Nordic Märzen that combines bready notes with fresh fruit and a hint of herbs.
