Children and beer generally have little in common. Many of us were allowed to sip the foam on grandpa's beer every now and then, but anything else is reserved for people over 16. Alcohol is extremely detrimental to brain development, so we want to strongly advocate for compliance with legal regulations. Nevertheless, there is one connection between children and beer that we can applaud without reservation: namely, when a child's spirit, their wild playfulness, and their boundless courage inspire the creation of a beer.
This is exactly what happened at Orca. The family brewery from Nuremberg has partnered with another family-run brewery and created a beer-based monument to the youngest members of the family. The Orca and Hoppebräu breweries boast a total of five children who keep everyone busy. Buoyed by this exuberant energy, the breweries have developed Balg, a Belgian wit with a feather-light 3.8% alcohol and a whole lot of charm.
The golden-orange brew with its lush head smells enticingly of freshly grated orange zest and spicy coriander. This is surely due to the fact that both are on the list of ingredients. The flavor envelops the palate with a creamy texture, combining the sun-ripened orange and coriander with smooth malt and lovely spice. Balg is a playful beer that lends every day a summer vacation feel.
