The oceanic feeling is a phrase coined by French author, playwright, critic, and pacifist Romain Rolland. The Nobel Prize winner used the term in a letter to Sigmund Freud to describe a sensation of enveloping unity and connection with nature, the universe, and spiritual fabric. He linked it with the ocean to figuratively describe the depth, breadth, and immensity of the emotion. We immerse ourselves in the oceanic feeling when we are deep in the forest and hear nothing but the rustling of trees and the distant chirping of birds, when we meditate, or when a special beer gives us such pleasure that we become one with the world and its incredible treasures.
The team at Atelier Vrai seems to feel the same way, as they have created just such a beer and named it after this wonderful state of mind: The Oceanic Feeling is a New England IPA with a sensual 6.3% alcohol and an exuberantly fruity and herbal flavor thanks to the Cashmere and Riwaka hops.
The magical brew presents itself in the glass in an opaque peach gold color and is adorned with a fluffy head of white, mixed-pore foam. Leading notes in both aroma and flavor are passion fruit, lime, ripe pineapple, pink grapefruit, and earthy herbs.
