Christmas is a very special time in Herford. Over the span of four weeks, the citizens of the city get in the mood for Christmas Eve with a series of festivities and events. The month of celebration begins with the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas lights on the Monday before the first Advent. The whole city is decorated with fairy lights and the like, which illuminate the streets and alleys during the darker days. A Christmas market, a St. Nicholas celebration and the Herford Life Lights are other popular traditions. The Life Lights are 70 light bulbs on the Herford Christmas tree that change color over the course of Advent when a baby is born in the city’s hospitals.
In addition to these lovely customs, Herford also has a Christmas beer every year, which comes from the Herford brewery. Herford Christmas is a festival beer that is brewed in late summer so that it is ready in time for the start of the colder season.
The brew flows into the glass in a copper-red shimmering fawn color and is crowned with a fine head of foam. A beguiling scent of sweet grain, creamy caramel, candied nuts and homemade rosehip jam entices you to take a sip. The taste is made up of full-bodied malt, warm spices, toffee, roasted almonds and a hint of dried red fruit. Just right for short, cold days!
