You can create a lot of different things from oak wood. The hard, beautifully grained material is ideal for building furniture, but it is also used to make half-timbered structures. You can dress your floor in oak, build fences out of it or build your house out of the durable wood. It is also used to build windows and doors. Because it is not only robust, hard and weather-resistant, but also aromatic, oak wood is also used to make barrels for aging wine and distillates. Many breweries also store their beer in oak barrels that previously contained other drinks.
The Belgian brewery De Hoorn uses the oak in a different way: schnitzels made from the noble wood go into the kettle to flavor the beer. The brew is called Cornet Oaked and is a strong, Belgian blonde. The robust brew is stored on the toasted oak chips after the first fermentation. When the brewers are happy with the taste, the wood is removed and the beer goes through a second fermentation.
At the end of the complex process there is a powerful beer that robs you of all your senses with a whopping 8.5% alcohol content and an intensely spicy bouquet of exotic vanilla, meadow herbs, fruity sweetness, hoppy bitterness and woody hints.
