Bourgogne des Flandres is a beer style that has been officially known for almost 115 years. It was first mentioned in documents when it was registered with the Commercial Court in 1911, but it may well have been brewed at Van Houtryve earlier. The Van Houtryve family developed the style and have guarded it like a treasure ever since. For a long time they ran three different breweries, but even after they were sold, the recipe remained in the family and was produced under their supervision by other Belgian breweries. Today, Michel Van Houtryve is the keeper of the recipe and the speciality is brewed under his watchful eye by Brasserie Timmermans. A few years ago, production was outsourced and moved back to Brussels, where Bourgogne des Flandres originally came from.
To create the incomparable taste of this delicacy, a Lambic from Timmermans, which has been aged in an oak barrel for several months, is married with the freshly brewed Bruinen Os, a top-fermented beer. Together, these brews produce a mahogany-brown beer with a ruby-red shimmer and a densely porous head that brings an incomparable aroma to the glass. Soft notes of creamy caramel combine with toasted grain bread, wild berries and a hint of red wine to create an irresistible mixture. An elegant, fresh and fruity acidity gives the noble tipple the finishing touch.
