Beer is often far more than just a pleasure—it can tell stories, evoke memories, evoke emotions, and honor those who have left a lasting mark. La Trappe Isid'or is just such a beer. It was brewed in 2009 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot, the Netherlands, and to pay homage to a man who founded the monastery's brewing tradition: Brother Isidorus. He was the abbey's first master brewer and, in 1884, laid the foundation for the continuing history of this historic Trappist brewery.
Isid'or flows into the glass in a shimmering ruby red, copper-gold color, adorned with a delicate, creamy white head. The nose unfolds a complex interplay of aromas of ripe fruit, delicate herbs, and floral nuances reminiscent of a lush, blooming monastery garden in late summer. The palate reveals a harmonious balance. The entry is fruity, bringing the sweetness of malty caramel tones to the tongue. Floral hints, earthy herbs, and a gentle bitterness elegantly round out the taste.
With 7.5% alcohol by volume, Isid'or is robust but never overpowering. It pairs wonderfully with grilled vegetables, aged Gouda, roasted meats, or delicate milk chocolate. A beer that combines tradition, craftsmanship, and monastic tranquility in every sip—and is available in both small bottles and large bottles for sharing!
