The quince is a stone fruit that is rarely eaten raw due to its hard flesh and delicate bitterness. However, you can make delicious things out of it: We love grandma’s quince slices, like to drink a glass of quince liqueur in the evening and enjoy quince jelly on toasted brioche thickly spread with butter. We are also fans of beers with quince.
The Dutch brewery De Molen has an extremely fine brew that combines quince with crisp apple. Kwee & Appels is a so-called Heavy Blonde - a powerful interpretation of the classic Belgian blonde, which has been refined with apple juice, quince puree and cinnamon. The heavyweight speciality brings 8.5% alcohol content to the table and shines with a full-bodied body and subtly seasoned 30 bitter units. In the glass, the brew presents itself in a coppery honey gold with an airy, white head that smells sensually of freshly cooked quince jam, sponge cake and ripe, red apples. The first sip follows the ravishing first impression and enchants the palate with full malt, notes of oven-fresh biscuits, juicy apple, floral quince, a pleasant hint of cinnamon and an elegant, fruity acidity that is reminiscent of apple wine.
De Molens Kwee & Appels is a delicious fruit drink – so delicious that you only notice the cleverly incorporated alcohol when your cheeks are as red as apples and the world around you is swaying slightly.
