Although the world of craft beer is characterized by creativity and freedom, there are still some (unwritten) rules that must be followed when preparing modern beer styles. India Pale Ales should be brewed with as many hops as possible, porter and stout should contain a variety of different malts, and the reinterpretation of the classic Gose still contains coriander seeds and salt in most cases. The team at the Uiltje brewery loves craft beer and likes to stick to the rules, but every now and then the wild brewers want to do their own thing.
Their latest creation is therefore a so-called grape ale, a brew whose only specification is the grapes that give it its name. The brew is called Roman Rendez-Brew (based on the Roman Rendez-Vous) and, in addition to the predetermined grapes, also contains a whole range of other Italian-inspired ingredients: the finest red wine supports the fruitiness of the grapes, oak wood chips provide an earthy spiciness, the peel of grapefruit and bergamot add a tangy freshness and the coriander seeds conjure up a herbal note in the beer.
Uiltjes Roman Rendez-Brew brings a reasonable 5.9% alcohol content to the table and tastes like a good red wine matured in oak barrels, creamy toffee, white grape juice and light malt meet on the tongue. Unconventional!
