The latest coup from Catalan brewery Espiga is its Black Cel Ona series. This series will be all about the Imperial Stout because, according to Espiga, it is the mother of all beers. It’s about strong, dark beers with character, good alcohol and taste. So far so good!
The Black Cel Ona Imperial Stout fits Espiga’s definition perfectly: it’s black as night, it has a powerful 9.5% ABV and it’s a real firework of flavors. The beer pours deep black into the glass and forms a small, chestnut-brown head of foam. Caramelly roasted malt notes and a hint of dark chocolate immediately hit your nose. The taste test shows a subtle sweetness and a full body with a nice creaminess. The dark beer is delicately carbonated and tastes slightly smoky. On the tongue, roasted malt, caramel, chocolate and coffee combine to form a dark symphony that fades into a bitter finish.
We recommend the Black Cel Ona to everyone who likes to drink powerful, full-bodied beers. The full-bodied taste and relatively high alcohol content make the Imperial Stout a beery delicacy that goes wonderfully with red meat and chocolatey desserts.
