There are numerous myths and legends about the Vikings. One of them says that the warriors from the far north brewed two types of beer: a malty sweet variant, which was probably intended for immediate enjoyment, and one that was more bitter and alcoholic. The seafarers probably brewed the latter for their long journeys on the boat. A higher alcohol content and an extra portion of hops make beer last longer and even then enabled the Vikings to take their nutritious beer with them on longer forays into unknown territory.
Even if only distant relatives of the sea warriors walk this earth today, the Alsatian brewery Les Intenables has come up with a beer for real Vikings. Yes Viking is a fine Double India Pale Ale that would make a wonderful portage on longer raids thanks to its hefty 8.0% ABV and unreasonably large amount of hops. As a small homage to the Scandinavian origins of the Vikings, the brewers use the Norwegian yeast strain Kveik, which gives the beer an elegant acidity. In harmony with this, the hops deliver juicy notes of ripe melon and yellow stone fruit. A hint of bitterness completes the play of aromas and clearly places Yes Viking in the second category of the original Viking brews: bitter, alcoholic and delicious!
