The craft beer movement has not only ensured that there are numerous new beer styles, but also that lesser-known beer styles from all over the world have become known. Craft brewers are always on the lookout for new sensations and often stumble upon styles that were previously unknown in their latitudes. One of these beer styles is the Catharina Sour, which originally comes from Brazil. This sour beer is inspired by the classic Berliner Weisse and found its way to South America in colonial times - and then back to Europe. The Catharina Sour is based on a light beer with wheat, is soured with lactic acid bacteria like the Berliner Weisse and enriched with fresh fruit after fermentation.
Browar Pinta from Poland discovered the style for itself and has launched an extremely tasty variant of it, Kwas XY. Their version has a mild 4.7% alcohol content and is acidified with lactic acid bacteria. The wonderfully tropical taste is provided by passion fruit puree, which makes up an incredible 15% of the total mass of the beer and has a significant effect on the aroma.
Kwas XY Catharina Sour comes in a dense, cloudy lemon yellow. It smells and tastes of passion fruit and other tropical fruits, citrus fruit and floral hops. Very refreshing and wonderfully drinkable.
