The legalization of cannabis has caused heated discussions and a lot of commotion in Germany. While some are happy and have immediately placed an order for a grow tent, pH meter and square pots, others are critical and fear the consequences. The perfect drink for sitting back and waiting comes from the pen of exceptional master brewer David Hertl from the Hertl brewery: the crazy Franconian is known for his unusual beer creations and is naturally one of the first to see cannabis as a brewing opportunity. Because David’s expertise covers cones and not buds, the teams from the Grasshopper Crew and HempAge were on hand to advise him. Together they chose a variety that falls into the industrial hemp category and has no psychoactive properties. It would have been too good to be true!
Instead, the plant provides a fine aroma that harmonizes wonderfully with the natural taste of hops, malt and yeast. The skilled brewer has filled his brew with the hemp flowers: This technique is actually called cold hopping and involves adding hops to the cooled beer wort. In the case of Franken-Hanf, the hops were replaced with hemp - a kind of cold hemp hopping.
