One of Theodor Storm's most famous works is "The Rider on the White Horse." The novella is set on the rugged North Sea coast and revolves around a young man who, through diligence and intelligence, but also through ruthlessness, works his way up from farmhand to dike-reeve. His success is met with envy, which ultimately leads to his downfall. This atmospheric work illuminates the harsh life on the coast and the powerlessness with which the people there were, and still are, exposed to the forces of nature. "The Rider on the White Horse" remains relevant to this day and is read and interpreted by students throughout the country.
The Wacken Brewery is fascinated by myths and legends. Many of its beers are dedicated to Norse deities and other dark, fictional figures. The White Horseman is among the characters to whom the brewery has erected a beery monument. Together with the artist Jens Rusch, they created a collaboration that pays homage not only to the legendary Wacken Open Air festival but also to Storm's mysterious protagonist.
Schimmelreiter is a North German pilsner, crystal clear and golden with a light, airy head. This brew has a moderate 5.2% alcohol content and, according to the brewery, is slightly fuller-bodied than a typical pilsner. The beer smells and tastes of freshly cut grass, sun-ripened citrus fruits, green hop cones, and a hint of robust grain. Very drinkable!
