For their latest beer, the American brewery Stone Brewing has teamed up with friends from Modern Times. Both breweries are located in the same city in California and share a love and passion for exceptional craft beer and indecent amounts of hops.
The joint project is Wizards & Gargoyles, a Hazy Coffee IPA that was brewed with coffee and the American aroma hops Citra, Cashmere, Centennial, HBC 685 and HBC 692. The coffee runs like a red thread through the drinking pleasure and can be experienced from the first sniff to the last sip.
Wizards & Gargoyles flows into the glass in cloudy amber and shines like freshly squeezed orange juice. A fine-pored crown of beige foam sits enthroned on the beer and exudes an enticing scent of freshly brewed coffee, roasted nuts and tropical fruits. A very unusual combination that makes you excited about the first sip. This presents a fine toasted bitterness that is reminiscent of strong coffee in terms of taste. There are also fine aromas of caramel malt. The hops join in the middle section and, in addition to spicy resin notes, give the play of aromas a whole lot of fresh fruit: juicy aromas of apricots, lemon, mandarins and grapefruit flood the palate. The finish is strong, hoppy, bitter and so delicious that it’s better to have a second can ready.
