In Bavaria and Franconia, the Brotzeit is not a simple evening meal, but a whole culture. We celebrate our Brotzeit and go to the cellar or the beer garden for it. If you have to hurry or the weather is bad, you can also eat Brotzeit at home, but it is only really fun when you find yourself in the right place. On the one hand, this is due to the freshly tapped beer that you get there, and on the other hand, the conviviality and the cozy get-together with friends or family are an important part of the fun. The classic Brotzeit consists of a wooden board on which butter, pickles, various types of cheese, salami, ham, cold cuts and liver sausage, raw onions and mustard are arranged. Tasty extras are sausage or cheese with music ("music" means pickled in vinegar and onions), Obazda or Ziebeleskäs with chives. Every Brotzeit comes with a basket of bread from the stone oven and, of course, a cold beer.
The Franconian brewery Weiss Rössl knows how to serve a proper snack and has created a beer just for it. The brew is called Brotzeit Helles and complements Göttinger, Limburger and Co. with full-bodied grain, creamy caramel, freshly mown grass and a hint of sun-dried straw. The tasty Brotzeit Helle brings a slim 4.9% alcohol content to the table and tastes good even without a snack if necessary.
