At Barbarossa I Am, there is a certain fascination with the great rulers of the last millennia. It is not for nothing that the Hamburg beer label dedicates its daily activities to Frederick I, who is popularly known as Barbarossa. The Staufer was emperor of the Roman-German Empire in the mid to late 12th century and made a name for himself through numerous crusades and several confrontations with the Pope of the time. He also played a role in the city’s history: he granted the pearl the charter that got the grain trade and beer brewing rolling.
Inspired by this (or another) king, the team at Barbarossa created I Am The King, a powerful imperial stout. The brew is made with a range of in-house grains and malts as well as freshly roasted coffee, and after brewing it is aged for an incredible eight months in oak barrels that previously housed the finest rye whiskey. The use of carefully selected malts, the addition of coffee beans and the finishing in whiskey barrels result in a tightly woven taste experience that delights with voluminous fullness, a stunning 8.5% alcohol content and a dark aroma. Dominant notes of freshly brewed mocha and delicately melting chocolate are the leading notes, a hint of red fruit and diverse malt notes round off the profile harmoniously.
