Red beer is one of Germany’s most traditional beer styles and has left its mark in several regions. This malty beer plays a significant role in brewing history in both Nuremberg and Hamburg. In Franconia, red beer was brewed as early as the 14th century and was considered the favorite beer of Nuremberg residents and their guests for centuries. In the Hanseatic city, however, the northern German variant emerged somewhat later but quickly gained popularity – long before Pilsner took over there.
Red beer is characterized by its characteristic copper color and balanced, malty flavor. A variety of different malts create a blend of cereal and roasted aromas, delicate caramel, subtle fruit notes, and a hint of nuttiness.
The Hanseatic brewery Barbarossa I Am embraces this range of flavors in a modern reinterpretation of the traditional style. With The Sailor, they present a red beer that takes on a sophisticated, contemporary flavor through aging in red wine barrels. The beer presents itself in the glass in a cloudy, chestnut red color with a thick, creamy head. The first sip reveals fruity, slightly acidic nuances from the barrel aging, before aromas of freshly baked bread, grain, caramel, and spicy wood unfold – a complex, harmonious taste experience with a historical foundation and a modern touch.
