Belle de Lovain is a Belgian plum variety that was first cultivated in a nursery in Leuven in the mid-19th century. Due to its firm, golden flesh and the wonderful balance of fruity acidity and soft sweetness, the plum is eaten both raw and cooked. You can make an excellent plum cake with crumbly, buttery crumbles from it, and the purple fruit is also the basis of a fine beer from 3 Fonteinen.
The Belgian brewery uses the stone fruits to create its popular Pruim Belle de Lovain - a traditional lambic that has been stored on the fresh fruit for almost four months. The basis of the beer consists of an incredible thirteen brews of different maturation times that were matured in wooden barrels. Almost 400 grams of plums were used per liter to conjure up a maximum of fruit flavor in the beer.
3 Fonteinens Pruim Belle de Lovain flows into the glass in orange-golden copper and is adorned with a fleeting hint of white foam. The scent of ripe plums is accompanied by a mixture of spicy yeast, dark grapes and earthy wood, which makes you curious about the first sip. The taste test reveals a medium-weight beer with an intense plum aroma and harmonious hints of oak, stone fruit, fine balsamic vinegar, vineyard peach and leather. An extremely elegant pleasure that skilfully balances light-footed acidity, fruity sweetness and complexity.
