The La Trappe brewery from Berkel-Enschot in the Netherlands is part of the exclusive circle of Trappist breweries. Only a few breweries worldwide meet the requirements for this title and bear this special seal. Trappist beer may only be brewed in monasteries or their immediate surroundings. Monks of the Cistercian order must be present during the brewing process and all proceeds from the sale of the beer must go to the maintenance of the monastery and to charitable causes. There are currently around ten breweries that bear the "Authentic Trappist Product" quality seal.
With its latest creation, the Trappist brewery La Trappe has achieved a real sensation: Nillis is the world’s first non-alcoholic Trappist beer. In 2022, the brew was awarded a gold medal in the Dutch Beer Challenge and has since enjoyed great popularity among fans of non-alcoholic brews.
Nillis flows into the glass in a strong ruby red and is crowned with a hand’s breadth of creamy, hazelnut-brown foam. The beer smells of vanilla, candied fruit, warm spices and freshly baked cake. The taste skilfully continues the olfactory first impression and brings a full-bodied composition of brown bread, dried figs, plum cake, caramel and roasted nuts to the tongue. The play of aromas consists of dry bitterness, earthy, sweet and sour components and shines with astonishing depth and complexity.
