Rose water is a noble essence made from the petals of the rose. Distilling rose oil produces essential water that has a beguiling scent and is used in the cuisine of various countries and in cosmetic products. It is used to flavor marzipan, make desserts and refine lassi. The Dutch brewery De Molen proves that it can also be used for brewing. Their New England IPA Roos & Blad not only has the rose in its name, but also on the list of ingredients. The brewers use both roses and rose water to give their brew a beguiling, floral undertone.
Roos & Blad flows into the glass in a delicately clouded corn gold and forms a fleeting veil of white foam. The hops Amarillo, Cascade and Centennial provide a tropical scent that goes wonderfully with the aroma of the rose. The floral and fruity first impression continues one to one on the first sip: on a base of yeasty bread dough, light malt and creamy caramel, light notes of mandarin, grapefruit, orange peel and pine resin build up. After a few sips, the rose water takes over the main role and spreads with floral elegance on the palate.
Without a doubt, this beer is not to everyone’s taste, but fans of rose water will definitely get their money’s worth here.
