Dark beers have an almost magical attraction for us. When you pour them into a glass, they beguile you with their irresistible appearance and envelop you in heavy, sensual clouds of aroma. The creamy hazelnut-brown foam looks like a chocolate dessert and the opaque depths of the body seem to contain a thousand secrets. Dark beers draw out all the facets of the malt and often taste as if they contained bars of chocolate, whole pots of freshly brewed espresso and the quintessence of roasted aromas themselves.
One of these dark masterpieces comes from the pen of Camba Bavaria and is called Chiemsee Dark. This roasted, aromatic beer speciality is a so-called black lager and more than lives up to its name with its deep black color. A nut-colored crown of densely porous foam that smells of dark chocolate, mocha, toasted grain and a hint of liquorice sits on top of the brew in the darkest shade of mahogany. After you have sniffed a pinch of this olfactory symphony, the first sip is unavoidable. The enjoyment continues in a culinary way and brings a powerful composition of earthy cocoa, creamy caramel, coffee beans and roasted malt to the tongue. A spicy hint of liquorice, a berry undertone and a harmonious roasted bitterness impressively complete the pleasure.
With only 17 bitterness units, Chiemsee Dark is one of the milder dark beers.
