Kolsch is a world of its own. The traditional beer from Cologne is subject to strict regulations, is brewed according to traditional recipes and is served by a specially designated waiter. Nothing is left to chance when it comes to the favorite drink of the people of Cologne. In order to protect the beer style, at some point a number of breweries were appointed in the cathedral city that are allowed to brew the official Kölsch. Only the beer from these breweries is considered real Kölsch in Cologne and is served by Köbes.
One of these honorable and traditional breweries is Früh. For almost 120 years, a fine Kölsch has been brewed not far from Cologne Cathedral and the lifestyle of this beer style has been celebrated. The brewers from Früh have now entered into an unusual collaboration and have teamed up with their Scottish-Berlin colleagues from the BrewDog brewery. In a joint campaign, they brewed an unconventional Kölsch that combines convention and tradition with modern ideas and a breath of fresh air.
Their work is called King Kölsch and, with a strong 5.2% alcohol content, brings a little more rotation to the glass than the conventional Kölsch. The brewers were also generous with the bitterness units. The end result is an extra-fine Kölsch with strength, feeling, harmoniously balanced bitterness, a slim body and the unmistakable taste of a Cologne original.
