You come across them in beer gardens, in quaint Franconian pubs and in the taverns of traditional breweries. They hold half a liter of freshly tapped beer and keep it cool for a long time. With their finely glazed surface, they fit comfortably in the hand and stand stable on the table. They have a dark, deep sound when you clink glasses and the beer tastes wonderful from them. We're talking about clay jugs. These traditional vessels have been around for thousands of years and rumors say that the ancient Romans and Cleopatra drank from them. The earthen tankards were once used to store and transport liquids and other goods, to serve drinks and as a drinking vessel. Nowadays, they are used almost exclusively for serving and enjoying beer and only in tradition-conscious breweries. In Franconia and Bavaria, however, the clay jug is still quite common.
The Kundmüller brewery is located in the heart of Franconia and still likes to serve its beer in mugs today. Anyone who wants to bring a piece of Franconian hospitality home can even buy the mugs. A popular example is the clay mug that was designed to mark the 150th anniversary of the Kundmüller brewery. Festive, practical and extremely decorative!
