The two New Zealand hop varieties Riwaka and Nelson Sauvin are among the most aromatic varieties in the world and are used primarily in modern craft beers. Riwaka is a distinctive hop with an intense citrus aroma. Its distinctive grapefruit and citrus flavor, reminiscent of freshly grated citrus zest, is particularly striking. The variety also delivers notes of passion fruit and herbs. Riwaka is a cross with a high proportion of Saaz genetics. Due to its low yields, it is highly sought after by brewers but also difficult to obtain. Nelson Sauvin, named after the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety, is known for its grape-like aromas reminiscent of white wine, gooseberry, lychee, and tropical fruits. The flavor is complex, with a dry, almost wine-like finish. This variety was also developed in New Zealand and is a cross between a wild hop and New Zealand varieties.
Why are we telling you this? Because these two special hops are the protagonists in Blech.Brut's latest New England IPA, Laser Legs. The 6.8% strength brew is based on a trio of wheat, barley, and oat malts and flows into the glass in a creamy, densely clouded grain gold. This green gold delivers a firework of juicy citrus, tropical fruits, white grapes, and delicate herbs. The NEIPA is dry, powerful in its stature, and beautifully bitter.
