The name of this wonderful smoked beer is based on a legend that is told around the Staffelberg. According to the legend, little gnomes lived in one of the dark caves of the Staffelberg. They were called Querkel and went to see them when they had a mysterious illness, needed help with heavy work, or needed good advice. People and oddballs lived in peaceful harmony and they helped each other out. The help of the Querkel was paid for with the delicious Franconian dumplings. However, since the little creatures could never get enough of it, it sometimes happened that a queer stole one or the other dumpling from a saucepan. The industrious farmer’s wives tolerated this mouth-robbing because they could always rely on the oddballs in return. All but one: one fateful day, a miserly cook decided to count her dumplings from now on and not to tolerate the thefts anymore. The troublemakers got wind of it and left their cave to live somewhere else from then on.
Because the Staffelberger people still miss their clever and helpful Querkel to this day, the Staffelberg-Bräu has dedicated a fine beer to them: The Querkerla is an unfiltered smoked beer that wraps people and wights around their fingers with its strong, spicy and full-bodied character and with a touch smoke charms.
