With Hokey Religion, Emperor's Brewery once again proves its flair for rich aromas and uncompromising enjoyment. In its barrel-aged version, this Imperial Stout reaches a new dimension: After brewing, the beer matured for a full 20 months in barrels previously used for premium Four Roses Bourbon. This extended aging process lends the already intense base beer additional depth, elegance, and a subtly woven barrel signature.
In the glass, Hokey Religion presents itself as a deep, opaque black with a delicate, hazelnut-brown head. The bouquet is opulent and multifaceted: toasted coconut and melt-in-the-mouth chocolate mingle with vanilla, caramel, and the warm spice of bourbon. Subtle notes of oak, toffee, and a hint of honey resonate, lending the aroma additional refinement. On the palate, it reveals a powerful, creamy body. The generous amount of toasted coconut provides a rich, exotic flavor, while Colombian cacao nibs contribute intense chocolate notes. Barrel aging imparts an elegant dryness, subtle roasted aromas, and a comforting bourbon warmth that perfectly balances the luscious sweetness. The 12.7% alcohol is superbly integrated, contributing to a long, velvety finish.
A decadent stout that gives the Bounty chocolate bar a grown-up twist: melt-in-your-mouth chocolate, a creamy coconut center, and a generous dose of spicy bourbon. Perfect.
