The Catholic Church has a whole arsenal of different saints. Each of them is the patron saint of a specific professional or social group and they are commemorated once a year on a day dedicated to them.
A Frank among the saints is Leonhard von Limoges, also known as Leonhard von Noblat. According to legend, the reclusive man was given a piece of land on which he later founded Noblat Monastery as thanks for saving the queen and her baby. Today the saint is worshiped as the patron saint of horses and livestock and is considered a helper in need. Saint Leonhard also has an open ear for farmers, miners, blacksmiths and locksmiths. Countless breweries in and around Franconia have dedicated beers to him for his charitable work. St. Leonhard’s Day falls on November 6th every year and is in the middle of the bock beer season.
The Merkendorf brewery Hummel also has a beer in honor of Saint Leonhard: The Leonhardi Bock is a light, tart strong beer with an invigorating 7.5% alcohol and a lush character. The deep golden beer is adorned with a stately and stable white foam crown and scores with notes of honey, hoppy herbs, oven-fresh bread, creamy caramel and sweet malt in smell and taste.
