Kellerbier is one of the cornerstones of Franconian brewing and is an indispensable part of Franconian breweries. This smooth and robust brew pairs perfectly with local cuisine and, thanks to its balanced character, appeals to a wide range of beer connoisseurs. As a Franconian, David Hertl—head and master brewer of the eponymous Hertl brewery—is deeply rooted in this style. But that doesn’t stop him from completely turning it on its head.
David is known for his knack for unconventional flavors and ingredients, as well as for his masterfully brewed classics of the Bavarian beer scene. Mr. Gin Keller combines these two areas into a magnificent brew. The basis is the recipe for the traditional Kellerbier from Hertl: Opas Liebling (Grandpa’s Favorite) is a down-to-earth brew with a malt-forward flavor and subtle nuances of caramel, oven-fresh bread, and stone fruit. The use of juniper and lemongrass adds a touch of excitement.
The inspiration for this stroke of genius is gin: a spicy spirit that David loves and makes himself. Now he combines cellar beer with his favorite schnapps, creating an unconventional brew that combines subtle spice and lemony freshness with bread crust, toffee, robust grains, and fruity hops.
You’ve definitely never drunk Kellerbier like this before!
