While in some places Father Christmas is responsible for distributing gifts at Christmas, in others it’s Santa Claus, Père Noël, Joulupukki, or La Befana. In Franconia, it’s the Christkind (Christ Child) to whom children send their wish lists: a blond, curly-haired, heavenly being who procures, wraps, and places countless gifts under Christmas trees year after year. In many places, there’s a human representative of the Christkind who is chosen and appears in an angelic costume at Christmas markets, visits retirement homes and kindergartens, and brings joy to sick children in hospitals. The Christkind is a central figure in Franconian Christmas traditions – and even has a presence at the beer market.
This beery tribute comes from the Hübner brewery and is called Steinfelder Christkindla. Brewed annually shortly before Advent, it delights Hübner’s customers with its full-bodied character and caramel-sweet flavor.
The festive brew pours into the glass with a reddish-gold shimmer and is adorned with a snow-white crown of fluffy foam. A spicy aroma of straw and herbs tickles the nose. The first sip reveals an elegant flavor profile composed of roasted nuts, melt-in-the-mouth toffee, soft cereal notes, and a pleasant hint of hops. A distinct bitterness harmoniously rounds off the experience.
Merry Christmas from the Christkindla of Steinfeld!
