There are many beer styles that can showcase the full range of hop flavors. Pils is definitely one of them—especially when it comes from the hop-producing town of Spalt.
When it comes to hops, the Spalter Stadtbrauerei brewery is right at the source and can draw on the fruits of one of the largest and most renowned hop-growing regions in the country. Brewmaster Stefan Herz and his team are only too happy to take advantage of this luxury. Their creations contain twice as much hops as usual, and the staff hasn't skimped on their Pilsner either: Spalter Pils No. 1 is made from Pilsner malt and the finest Spalt hops. The green gold from the surrounding hop gardens conjures up a delicate herbal note in the beer, which pairs wonderfully with the clear, clean malt base and the nuanced bitterness.
The brew flows into the glass, the color of sun-ripened grain, crowned with a generous head of compact, white foam. A harmony of roasted grain, spicy sage, woody thyme, and earthy bay leaves fills the nose and entices the palate. The palate tingles with notes of freshly mown mountain meadow and robust malt. This fresh, light-bodied pilsner has a pleasant bitterness that permeates the beer from the first sip to the last.
A Spalter treasure that isn't called No. 1 Pils for nothing!
