Grapefruit is a citrus fruit with a bitter taste that didn’t have a very good reputation for a while. After it became an integral part of all diets and the only breakfast for many health-conscious people, nobody really wanted the fruit anymore. And grapefruit was (and still is) less popular with children than oranges, tangerines, etc. because of its bitterness. Fortunately, the breweries of the world jumped into the breach for the citrus fruit and triggered an image change. Some of the most popular hop varieties in the craft beer movement have an unmistakable grapefruit aroma and some brewers even brewed the juice or peel of the fruit directly. Suddenly, beers with a refreshing grapefruit flavor populated the market and changed our image for the better.
Grapefruit can also be found in the area of beer mixed drinks: many breweries have a sparkling grapefruit shandy in their range. Warsteiner is one of them.
The brewery from Warstein in North Rhine-Westphalia brews its shandy from 40% of the finest Pilsner and 60% lemonade, which contains natural grapefruit flavor as well as juice from lemon, red grapefruit and orange. The combination of mildly hopped, bitter Pilsner and fruity, fresh lemonade creates a tart delight with sweet notes and a hint of acidity. Wonderfully refreshing and wonderfully slim with just 2.0% alcohol content.
