A strong festival beer that is also impressive in the festival beer stronghold of Franconia!
The Irish brewery Brehon Brehouse looks back on a relatively short history. It was only in 2013 that Seamus McMahon founded the business, which was previously a dairy farm. The advantage of this is the milestones that the brewery celebrates with special brews and special beers. One such celebratory beer is Crann Beatha, which was brewed by McMahon to celebrate the 200th brew.
To celebrate an anniversary properly, you need a very special beer. Crann Beatha is such a special beer indeed. After the brewing process, the imperial stout was filled into hand-made whiskey barrels and matured there to its full glory. Since breweries usually don't have whiskey barrels in the cellar, the Brehon team cooperated with their friends from the Nephin distillery in Mayo. They were happy to make their barrels and the associated cellar available. The result is a strong-character stout that smells wonderfully of dark fruits. On the nose, plum and raisin mix with the seductive aromas of candied orange peel and dark chocolate. In terms of taste, Crann Beatha presents a similar palette to that of the fragrance. The wooden barrels add a nice vanilla note and give the beer a soft, caramelly roundness.
The well-sounding name of the beer is derived from the Irish term for the tree of life. By maturing the beer in wooden barrels, the brewers draw a nice parallel to the name and round off the beer as a whole.
