Retro is in and has been for quite some time. After years of laughing behind closed doors at the old-fashioned furnishings of Grandma’s living room and Aunt Ilse’s dusty clothes, we now long to own egg-shaped armchairs and wide-flared trousers. Trends are a never-ending cycle and it’s really only a matter of time before they come back and are more popular than ever. Even the worst fashion and design sins (we’re thinking of shoulder pads, solid wood wall units and mullets) make a comeback at some point.
The Irish brewery Rye River is also in retro fever and is sending us on a journey back in time to the beginnings of India Pale Ale with its Retro IPA. And that doesn’t mean the birth of the craft beer in the 1990s, but rather the time when the legendary beer was created. The roots of the IPA lie in 18th century England. At that time, the extra-strong IPA was created to be sent to the colonies in India.
But back to the present. Rye River Brewing’s Retro IPA brings an intensity of full-bodied malt notes to the glass that is unusual for this style: delicately melting caramel meets hearty grain, the Cascade and Columbus hops round off the play of aromas with floral, grassy and citrus-fresh undertones.
