Cherries.
Those who have been reading along for a while know that we are huge fans of these deep red summer fruits. We can hardly wait for the early cherries to open the season at the end of May. Every day we stand under the cherry tree, peering up into its crown, searching for the first hints of red. We eat a few unripe fruits until finally the first perfect cherry floods our palates with juicy sweetness. Those who have cleverly planned their orchard can harvest cherries well into late August and enjoy these exquisite stone fruits all summer long. After that, you have to resort to jam, red wine cherries, and other preserved cherries – or perhaps cherry beer!
When you think of cherry beer, you immediately think of Belgian Kriek, but there are also wonderful sour beers made with the fruit. Anderson’s Kirss Me Sour Ale, for example.
Kirss Me is a wonderfully juicy sour beer brewed with whole, freshly picked cherries, clearly putting the summer fruit front and center. The cherry-red color, the enticing aroma, and, not least, the sweet, fruity taste all testify to the generous amount of cherries that went into the brewing kettle. A hint of biscuit, spicy yeast, and almond complete the delightful flavor profile.
Cherry!
