Bock beer is a robust beer style characterized by its full-bodied character, strong maltiness, smooth mouthfeel, and high alcohol content. Doppelbock is a derivative of this style, earning its name from an increased alcohol content. And if you add even more alcohol, you get a triple bock, elegantly known as a triple bock in English.
Smooth Criminal from Anderson’s is a prime example. This Estonian brewery has created a majestic bock beer with a remarkable 12% alcohol content, which, despite its impressive strength, is elegant and easy to drink. The exceptional balance and rich depth of flavor are thanks to barrel aging: after the brewing process was completed, the wort was transferred to wooden casks. These casks had previously held fine bourbon, imparting their exquisite aromas to the triple bock during aging. This extra step also gives the beer a velvety-smooth mouthfeel.
The silky bock pours into the glass in the darkest shade of mahogany brown, crowned with a thick, ivory-colored foam. A nose full of toffee, red dried fruit, bread crust, and bourbon entices the palate. The flavor profile comprises creamy caramel, bittersweet roasted notes, hearty grain, candied dark fruits, and brown sugar. The bourbon provides a delightful spiciness and a warmth that warms both body and soul.
Smooth Criminal – so velvety, so dangerous!
