Estonia is a country in Northern Europe, located on the Baltic Sea, and boasts more than 1,500 islands. Although it's quite far from Germany, there are many parallels between Estonian and German cuisine. Sauerkraut and potatoes are staple foods used in many recipes. Dairy products like sour cream, quark, and buttermilk are also found in both cuisines, as are black pudding, caraway seeds, turnips, and fish. Our favorite Estonian dish is salt herring served with boiled potatoes, sour cream, and raw onions sliced into thin rings. This hearty dish tastes especially delicious in winter and goes perfectly with a cold beer.
A good choice, for example, is Andersoni Hele, an Estonian pilsner from Anderson's brewery. This brew boasts a moderate 4.7% alcohol content and shines with its crisp, bitter, straightforward, and very drinkable flavor.
The brew pours into the glass a clear, brilliant gold, adorned with a delicate crown of white foam. A mild aroma of sun-ripened grain, freshly cut grass, and subtle citrus rises to the nose. The first sip follows this initial impression, caressing the palate with soft malt, citrusy notes, grassy hints, and a well-rounded bitterness. Uncomplicated and delicious!
